AARA Alaska Racquetball Anchorage Tournament / Shuttle History

AARA Sponsors help us provide participants & spectators snacks, meals, prizes & the post-season banquet so please thank them when you see them! We’re a small community and welcome extra people joining us. Stop by and share some laughter and a snack with us.

If you would like to become an AARA Member but aren’t sure you’re quite up to the competition, JOIN for just $25 and attend our Year End Banquet as part of your AARA Membership. Your $25 AARA Membership can be paid online here.

Tournaments and Shuttles will be held with divisions between skill levels when possible. Tournaments will be best of 3 games (2 to 15, 3rd to 11). Shuttles will have 8-minute rounds with a 2-minute transition between courts. There will be a 10-15 minute Admin time between each shuttle division start. Bring a good attitude and know it will be self-officiated as described here.

Entry into any AARA tournament means all parties, even participant’s spectators, agree to assume all risks; injury, damage &/or expenses arising out of participation in or attending the events. Specifically the 2022 USA Racquetball Event Release Form (here).

NOTE – In No Case can the AARA nor the AARA Board be held accountable for any issues experienced by you or the host that you select if a host or vehicle is offered. Alaska State Singles was held at at Alaska Club East on April 10-12, 2025
Events were separated into Open, Elite, A, 50+ & Juniors). Winners were determined by best of 3 games (First 2 to 15, win by 1; 3rd to 11, win by 1)
Open 1st place: Fidencio Rodriguez, Runner Up Tom Hood
Elite 1st place: Sanjay Talwar, Runner Up Percy Link
A 1st place: Trevor Spore r, Runner Up Paul Martindale
50+ Age 1st place: Tony Piper, Runners Up Darin Anderson

March 2025 Singles & Doubles Shuttles
Held at the Alaska Club East on Fri 3/14/25 & Sat 3/15/25
Singles Event winners were determined a Double Draw set up. First an 8 minute round robin with all entrants playing each other was played to determine ‘seeds’ and then a Draw with 1st round consolation was set up and single 15 point game was played for each round of the brackets to determine the final shuttle winners.
1st place Paul Ly, runner up Charlie Pannone, Consolation winner Scott Bird
The Doubles Shuttle was a Double Round Robin and the winners won the highest number matches, all entrants playing each other 10 minute rounds with 2 minutes between games. 1st place Tom Hood & Jimmy Stewart, 2nd Charlie Pannone/Tony Piper, 3rd Paul Ly/Trevor Sporer
1st place mugs were donated by Sundog Media, engraved by Alaska Spiritwear and racquet stringing provided by Gold Rush Racquet Services.
Thanks to Sundog Media for the main soup dish, Krispy Cremes, Gatoraid, etc., Gold Rush Racquet for the malsapa donuts, Cookies Mike Adams and oranges Jimmy Stewart.

February 2025 Alaska State Doubles
Held at the Alaska Club East on Thurs-Sat, 2/13/25-2/15/25, the event winners were determined by 3 games (First 2 to 15, win by 1; 3rd to 11, win by 1). Results:
Open 1st place: Tom Hood & Jimmy Stewart, Runners Up Matthew Veins & Jeff Sandy
Elite 1st place: Trevor Sporer & Paul Ly, Runners Up Joe & Cathy Law
A 1st place: Josiah Law & Paul Ly Runners Up Trevor Sporer & Paul Martindale
40+ Age 1st place: Dave Dershin & Josh Horst, Runners Up Rob Shobe & Mike Butteri
Mixed 1st place: Michelle LeKites & Paul Martindale, Runners Up Warren Bailey & Cathy Law
1st & 2nd place mugs were donated by Sundog Media, engraved by Alaska Spiritwear and racquet stringing provided by Gold Rush Racquet Services.
Thanks to Sundog Media for the main courses of smoked pork, brisket, complementing food items, Gatoraid, etc. Thank you Insight Marketing for the beverages, salad and to our many friends: Jimmy S, Scott B, Jeff S, and all that brought items to make the meals a success.

January 24 & 25, 2025 Shuttle is being held at the Alaska Club East. Shuttle format was 8-minute rounds with a 2-minute transition between courts. We had 11 teams so 1 team sat out to time the transitions and each team sat out once.

Doubles 1st place: Joe & Cathy Law, Runners Up Tom Hood & Kyler Maisey

November 15 & 16, 2024 Thanksgiving Shuttles were held at the Alaska Club East. Shuttle format was again the 8-minute rounds with a 2-minute transition between courts.

Awards: 1st place finishers received a Butterball turkey, runners up pumpkin pie courtesy of Sundog Media. Snacks, light meal afterward, and drinks were also supplied by Joe & Cathy Law (Sundog Media). Malasada donuts were supplied by Scott Bird (Gold Rush Racquet Service) & Tony Piper.

September 20 & 21, 2024 Kick-Off Shuttles were held at the Alaska Club East. Shuttle format was 8-minute rounds with a 2-minute transition between courts. Highest ranking participants started on highest court number, lowest ranking participants started on court 1. Winners moved up, losers moved down. Losers served 1st.

October 19-22, 2023 American Cancer Society Fundraiser Tournament
The AARA sent $900 to the American Cancer Society as part of the tournament.

APRIL 12-15, 2023
Alaska State Singles Tournament was held at the Alaska Club East.
Prizes included Racquetball gift cards: 1st place $100, 2nd place $50, 3rd place $25 and free racquet stringing by Gold Rush Racquet Services for the event winners. Winner: Kyler Maisey

All entrants had the opportunity to attend the Year End Banquet/Celebration, a fajita bar celebration at Gallo’s Mexican Restaurant on 8615 Old Seward Highway on April 15th, 2023 at 5:30 pm free of charge. Tim & Sharon Keaveny were honored for their contribution to Alaska racquetball & awards presented such as Sportsperson of the Year.

St Patrick’s Racquetball Shuttle was held at the Alaska Club East. $10 per event. Singles 10-11:30. Doubles 12-1:30. 10-minute games or 1st to 15 points. Regular Scoring.

Tournament was held at the Alaska Club East & results/photos were posted on our Facebook page.
Matches started 5:30 pm Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, Saturday Matches began at 9:00 am at Alaska Club East.
Prizes: All participants receive a 907 Racquetball cap. First & second place winners received an AARA coffee mug from Alaska Spiritwear & first place winners received a free racquet stringing by Gold Rush Racquet Services.
